Pro Tips For Selecting The Perfect Color Palette For Your Kitchen

Whether you’re painting your new home or doing a kitchen remodel, one of the top questions probably running through your mind is what color to paint your kitchen. You already know your kitchen sees a lot of use and there’s so much oil and stains flying around, so picking the right color is worth considering.

Remember paint should be the last aspect of the project. The color should be something that ties the room together, makes you feel at home.

In this post, we’re going to show you some tips and tricks to choose the best paint color for your kitchen.

First consider the existing kitchen color scheme

The first step to choosing the right color for your kitchen is to consider the existing color scheme. Take a comprehensive look at the kitchen in its entirety; lighting, the cabinets, hardware, and appliances. If the cabinets, counters and flooring are the same shade, the wall may serve as an accent color to balance things out. If there’s not much natural light coming into the space, consider going for lighter colors.

Avoid using dark colors for the kitchen walls when the cabinet and counters are dark-colored, as doing so can draw attention from those aesthetic elements and make the space appear smaller. Take in the overall dynamic of the home. Is this a place where you are going to be in for a long time or are your plans to fix up and sell? If you are going to stay, don’t be afraid to go bold with your color choice. Your home is your space to do what you want and paint is easy enough to change.

When in doubt, opt for off-white

White is a classic color that keeps any space looking as neat as can be. For your kitchen, this can be an excellent choice, as it can give the impression of being clean even with dirty dishes in the sink.

However, you want to stick with a shade of off-white for your kitchen as pure white may be overly sharp and less warm.

Apply shades of the same color

If you have a flair for the dramatic, consider varying shades of the same color throughout your kitchen. The wall color could be a shade up or down from the cabinetry, depending on how dark the latter is.

Be sure and put the paint samples on the walls in at least a 2ft by 2ft section using two coats of paint. Consider painting the new color in a few different places where you will get contrast from natural and artificial light.

The ideal place to test your color choices would be in a corner with varying lighting options.

Once you have chosen a few areas to try the new color out on then live with it on the walls for a minimum of three days. If you like it then move forward with the paint transformation, if not then start the process over again.

Choose the right sheen

Paints with a sheen can make flaws stand out. You don’t want that if you have some unappealing spots in your kitchen. Flat and flat enamel are great choices for your cabinets if you don’t want any sheen but, not easy to clean and not as durable.

Semi-gloss enamel is preferable if you desire some sheen but without a glass-like appeal. It’s also great for high-moisture areas.

Find inspiration online

When you’re at your wits end, hop online. The internet is filled with amazing kitchen design ideas, and you’ll find so many color palettes to choose from.

However, you want to be careful here.

For example, just because green toned walls worked in a kitchen you saw on PinterestInstagram, or Houzz, doesn’t mean it would work in yours. If the elements in that kitchen have colors that differ from yours, then green walls will likely not be suitable—unless you’re considering transforming the entire color of everything in your kitchen to match the one in the photo.

Stick with the neutrals

Neutral colors will always be timeless and universal because they work in any space and with any color combination. Whether you’re going for white, gray, off-white, or beige, no matter what color your cabinets and hardware are, you just can’t go wrong.

Usually your first color choice is the one you go with, so trust your gut and stick to it.
