deck refinishing near me- Merlin Oregon

Client Spotlight From Rotted Wood to Ready-to-Enjoy

When a homeowner in Merlin reached out to us about their back deck, the structure had seen better days. The joists were rotted, the decking was past its prime, and the whole thing needed more than a refresh — it needed a full rebuild. So our Grants Pass Painting crew got to work!

The scope of work

This was a ground-up rebuild. We started by carefully removing and salvaging the existing railing and built-in bench — both were in good shape and worth keeping. From there, we demolished the old deck floor, facia, and joists and hauled everything off site.

With a clean slate, we installed new pressure-treated joists spaced every 12–14 inches to give the deck a solid, long-lasting foundation. New pressure-treated facia boards went on next, followed by Trex Enhance composite decking in Saddle Brown — a beautiful, low-maintenance material that holds up beautifully in Southern Oregon’s climate.

Once the deck surface was down, we reinstalled the salvaged railing and bench, and added approximately 35 feet of new western red cedar railing to extend the perimeter and complete the look. Everything — new and old railing, bench included — received two coats of solid color stain for a clean, cohesive finish.

Why composite decking?

Composite decks is one of our go-to recommendations for Southern Oregon homeowners. Unlike traditional wood decking, composite boards don’t require regular maintenance, don’t splinter and last much longer. The Saddle Brown color has a warm, natural tone that blends beautifully with the wooded surroundings this property has in abundance. It looks great on day one and keeps looking great for years.

The finished product

The deck is now a genuine outdoor living space. Wide open, structurally sound, with built-in seating that faces out into the trees — it’s the kind of spot you actually want to spend time on. The railing detail, painted to match the bench, gives everything a put-together, intentional feel rather than a patchwork renovation look.

The project came together in about two weeks, and the homeowner was thrilled with the result.
